Introduction
Hi everyone, I’m Shandel Slaten Sutherland, and today I want to share with you a powerful concept that can transform your life: the stories we tell ourselves. These internal narratives shape our decisions, behaviors, and ultimately our outcomes. Let's dive into how changing your story can change your life.
The Power of Stories
We all love a good story, whether it’s through books or movies. But the most important story is the one happening in our heads. This internal dialogue, or belief system, influences everything we do. It’s the filter through which we process events and make decisions.
Understanding the Process
Here's how it works: an event happens – this is something we can't control, it’s just a fact. This event goes through our internal story, and out comes our feelings. Often, as entrepreneurs, we skip straight from feelings to behaviors without fully processing our emotions. These behaviors, repeated over time, lead to our results.
If we want different results, we must start by changing our story.
A Personal Journey
Let me share a personal experience. Growing up, my family believed only fools visited Disneyland in the summer due to long lines. This story stuck with me until I became a youth leader in Seattle and took 50 teenagers to Disneyland in August. Initially, I was determined to prove that this was a terrible idea.
However, as I listened to the kids, I realized they felt like they didn’t fit in anywhere. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects, I decided to change my story. I used the time in line to engage with the kids and listen to their stories. This shift in perspective transformed what could have been a miserable day into one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
Key Steps to Change Your Story
Here are three crucial steps to changing your story:
- Awareness: Recognize the current story you’re telling yourself.
- Curiosity: Be open to new perspectives and willing to explore different narratives.
- Courage: Have the bravery to change your story, even if it means challenging long-held beliefs.
Practical Applications
In my daily life, I apply these principles by questioning my internal narrative whenever I feel unhappy or stuck. By consciously choosing a different story, I can shift my emotions and behaviors, leading to better results. When working with teams, I encourage everyone to share their stories, as this broadens perspectives and fosters mutual understanding.
Conclusion
The stories we tell ourselves have immense power. By being aware, curious, and courageous, we can transform our narratives and, consequently, our lives. Take a moment to listen to others' stories and be open to changing your own – it might just change your life.
Thank you for joining me on this journey of transformation. Remember, the story you tell yourself today shapes the outcomes you experience tomorrow.
